Giano Roberts named the ACC Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Year

CLEMSON, S.C. — Giano Roberts was named the ACC Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Year and Wanya McCoy was named the ACC Men’s Indoor Track and Field Freshman of the Year, the conference announced on Wednesday. Roberts became just the second Tiger to be named Indoor Men’s Track Athlete of the Year (Tevin Hester, 2015), while McCoy is the sixth Clemson man to take home the Freshman of the Year award and the second Tiger in a many seasons (Daniel Cope, 2022).

Roberts won the ACC Championship in the 60 meter hurdles or his first career title in the event with a time of 7.65 seconds. Two weeks later, he ran a personal-best and school-record 7.55 seconds at the National Championship Meet in Albuquerque, N.M.

Roberts’s individual national title was Clemson’s first since Natoya Goule won the indoor 800 meter run in 2015, and it was the first for a man since Miller Moss won the indoor heptathlon in 2011. Roberts is the only Tiger to win the national championship in the 60 meter hurdles.

McCoy took home the ACC’s 400 meter run crown with a time of 45.91 seconds. He also finished fifth in the conference in the 200 meter dash and was a member of the ACC Champion and record-holding men’s 4×400 meter relay team. He was credited with 17.5 points at the ACC Championship Meet, most of any competitor in the field. This earned him the ACC Most Valuable Performer trophy, as he became the first male Tiger since Tevin Hester in 2016 to claim the honor.

The freshman from the Bahamas participated at the Indoor National Championship meet in both the 400 meter and the 4×400 meter relay. He became a second team All-American in both events and the first Clemson men’s freshman ever to be a two-time indoor All-American.For all the most up-to-date information regarding Clemson track and field, visit ClemsonTigers.com and follow @ClemsonTrackXC on Twitter and Instagram.
