Young Receivers Give Clemson Something It Has Needed — Depth

Behind the veterans is an intriguing collection of young talent.

Freshmen Naeem Burroughs, Gordon Sellars III and Connor Salmin all arrived early enough to participate in spring practice, and injuries to several veteran receivers during the spring created additional repetitions for the newcomers.

That experience could prove extremely valuable now.

Burroughs brings legitimate speed. Sellars provides size and versatility. Salmin adds another athletic option to a room that suddenly has numerous combinations available to position coach Tyler Grisham and Morris.

Clemson also returns Tyler Brown, Cole Turner and Juju Preston, giving the Tigers a receiver room that looks much different from one built around only two or three trusted options.

That depth matters even more in Morris’ offense.

The returning offensive coordinator has made no secret of his desire to challenge defenses vertically. Clemson cannot consistently play that way with only two receivers capable of threatening a defense. The Tigers need waves of players who can run, separate and force defensive backs to defend the entire field.

On paper, Clemson now has them.

The next several weeks will determine which players earn the opportunities.
