London Merritt: Clemson’s Transfer Edge Poised for Immediate Impact

London Merritt, a 6-3, 250-pound sophomore defensive end from Atlanta, Ga., arrived at Clemson in January 2026 via the transfer portal after one standout season at Colorado. A former four-star recruit (ESPN No. 52 nationally, top-5 edge rusher), he began his high school career at Woodward Academy in Georgia—helping the team reach the AAAAAA state title game as a junior with 31 tackles, 5 sacks, and 11 QB hurries—before finishing at IMG Academy in Florida (23 tackles, 4 TFL, 15 hurries in eight games as a senior).

Merritt signed with Deion Sanders’ Colorado Buffaloes in the 2025 class and delivered immediately as a true freshman: 25 tackles (8.0 for loss) and one sack in 12 games (one start), earning PFF All-Freshman honors and ranking fourth among Power Conference freshmen in TFL. He entered the portal after the season and committed to Clemson on Jan. 8, 2026, citing superior facilities, coaching, and NFL development track record.

“It was just a lot better than where I was: facility-wise, coaching-wise; I feel like it was just a better option for me,” Merritt said. “For me to get into that step to the next level. Especially with Coach Rumph. They just have a history of putting guys into the league.”

From the moment he enrolled, Merritt impressed. Head coach Dabo Swinney highlighted his fit early in spring practice, calling the freshman All-Conference talent a “super good fit.” In the March 28 spring game, Merritt exploded with 2.5 sacks (part of the Orange defensive line’s nine total) as the Orange rolled to a 23-3 win. He added four tackles and three TFL while showing the speed and violence Clemson needed on the edge.

Swinney’s post-game praise was blunt and glowing: “He’s a dude, and he’s got three years left. We needed somebody who was gonna help us right away at defensive end.”

Merritt projects as a high-upside piece in Clemson’s defensive end rotation alongside Will Heldt and Jahiem Lawson. With three seasons of eligibility remaining, elite athleticism (track and basketball background), and proven production, he brings explosive bend, power, and a confident “dog” mentality.”I’m filling in his shoes. No drop-off from where I’m coming in,” Merritt stated. “Helping the defense, period. That’s what I know that I will do… Shoot, I’m a dog. They ain’t got nothing to worry about with the ends.”

At just 19 years old with Power-5 experience already on his résumé, Merritt’s best football—and potentially an NFL future—still lies ahead in Clemson orange.
