Deshaun Watson Becomes Highest Paid Player in the NFL … 40 Million Per Season

By: Zachary Wagner

On Saturday, September 5th the news broke that former Clemson Tiger legend Deshaun Watson would be the next NFL quarterback to get a BIG payday. Bleacher Report was the first to break the news that Watson would be signing a four-year, $160 million contract extension with the Houston Texans.

Watson took to Twitter to confirm the agreement and give his praise to the organization that drafted him back in 2017.

The 160 million is the second largest contract in NFL history, only behind the half a billion dollar deal signed by the Kansas City Chiefs Patrick Mahomes earlier this year.

The contract is well deserved by the former Tiger quarterback. After leading Clemson to the 2016 National Championship and the first one for the school in over 30 years, Watson was picked 12th overall in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Texans.

Since entering the league, Watson has been phenomenal in the Houston red and blue. The quarterback has completed 66.8 percent of his passes for 71 touchdowns with 29 interceptions in three seasons. He’s also rushed for 1,233 yards on 217 attempts with 14 more scores.

Watson also led the Texans to their first playoff win since 2016 last year after beating the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Wildcard matchup.

The Texans and Watson held a press conference yesterday where Watson was surprised by his family, and Head Football Coach Dabo Swinney.
