Woods Commits!
Despite the loss of DC Brent Venables and DL Coach Todd Bates, somehow, the Clemson Tigers have successfully fended off Alabama for Top 5 defensive tackle Peter Woods. Woods announced his commitment to Clemson today, choosing the Tigers over Alabama, Florida and Jackson State.
The rankings differ depending on which site you put more faith in, but suffice it to say, he is one of the best at the position.
As a sophomore, Thompson High School went 14-0, won the state championship and Woods began to come into his own. Although Woods only played six games due to injury, he recorded 30 tackles, had eight tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and six quarterback hurries. He was just getting warmed up.
Woods exploded last year, registering 92 tackles, 26 tackles for loss, 11 sacks and 30 quarterback hurries, leading Thompson to a 13-1 record and another 7A Region 3 State Championship.
He becomes the 17th commitment for the Tigers, and the 2nd from the state of Alabama, joining 5-star QB Christopher Vizzina. “Stealing” two 5-stars from the Crimson Tide and Nick Saban is quite an accomplishment. “Cycling out” has become the trending term regarding this class, and a lot of fans are starting to realize that Dabo and staff have a plan, and it doesn’t necessarily include the transfer portal or humongous amounts of NIL money. The Tigers appear to be doing something right.
As good as having a high ranking recruiting class looks and makes everyone feel good, bragging rights and the such, Clemson fans know this staff develops players once they get them on the field. This class went heavy on the “big uglies”, Woods, 6-3 275, a 5-star according to ESPN, teams with 4-star Vic Burley, 6-5 270 at the defensive tackle position. Woods is ranked as the #1 DT in the country and Burley is #6. 4-star Stephiylan Green, 6-4 270, is a 3rd defensive tackle in this class. The Tigers are stacking up this year due to several along the defensive line departing next year. Woods is a major pickup for new OL Nick Eason, who was actually recruiting him to Auburn before taking over the Clemson job.
