The entire Clemson Football world held their breath when they learned star defensive end Xavier Thomas may have suffered a significant injury. Thomas suffered a foot injury expected to sideline him for at least 4-6 weeks following last Saturday’s scrimmage. If all goes well, Thomas could return for the start of ACC play, if not sooner.

When someone like XT misses time, you look to the depth everyone at Clemson has been discussing as a significant advantage for the Tigers.

Wes Goodwin got to speak about who stepped up in XT’s absence.

Xavier Thomas is expected to be out until the Wake Forest game with a toe injury he is rehabbing.

“I think those older guys, Myles, K.J., and Mascoll, have separated themselves. The next tier is Kevin Swint, Cade Denhoff, and getting Greg going as well. Those kind of guys can field that fourth spot and feel really confident that they can go out there and execute the defense.

All summer, Clemson has emphasized how important the depth of this team has been a real strength for them. That depth has generated good competition and opportunities for players to shine.

Having your guys like Murphy and K.J. on the edge is valuable, as both have the experience and talent to produce when called to.

The critical thing to note about this team is that players like Swint and Denhoff can come in at a moment’s notice and still bring the expected production on this defense.

Seeing those players step up is a promising sign for things to come as the season nears kickoff in Atlanta.
