Tigers even Series with 5-1 Win over Irish

After a first inning that saw neither team show any offensive prowess..  The Irish threatened in the top of the second ending the inning with a dramatic play at the plate that was originally called safe, but after review over turned and an inning-ending out was the result. In the bottom half of the second,  Clemson scored first after placing runners on the corners… Davis Sharpe delivers a shot to right field and scores the first run of the game. Followed by a double that scores 2 more by Theodesio.  Still no one out and runners at 2nd and 3rd for Majkowski who goes out swinging leaving the runners at 2nd and 3rd and one out for left fielder Kier Meredith who draws a walk to load the bases with 1 out.  Sam Hall then comes to the plate and strikes out on a wild pitch that allows another run to score.   4-0 Clemson with 2 out and runners on the corners as the Irish head Coach makes a trip out to the mound.  Logan Davidson and on a pitch out the Tigers get a run as the Irish Infield makes a bad decision and goes to the plate and allows the runner to score on a throw up the baseline.  Also allowed Meredith to advance, but Davidson strikes out and the Tigers get 4 runs on 3 hits, 4-0  Clemson going into the top of the third.

 

 

 

 Three up and three down for the Irish in the top half of the third. Grayson Byrd and his .323 batting average lead of the bottom half for the Tigers.  Byrd strikes out after battling off several pitches, Wilkie up who proceeds to lace one up the middle for a solid single.  Runner on first for Hawkins with one out.  Hawkins subsequently fights off several pitches into foul territory and eventually strikes out looking.  Davis Sharpe then flies out to short right field to end the inning.  4-0 Clemson moving to the top of the 4th.

Top of the 4th starts out with Grayson Byrds 4th put out of the first 13 batters, one out and the Irish are trying to find a way to cut into this 4-0 lead.  The inning ends on an incredible play by Kier Meredith who scaled the left field Wall and stole a home run from the not so lucky Irish so far here today as the Tigers go into the middle of 4 leading the Irish 4-0. 

 

In the bottom of the 4th Theodosio flies out and is followed with Single by Majkowski. Kier Meredith flies out on a loud fly ball for out number 2, then Sam Hall lines a solid single to left runners on first and second for Logan Davidson with 2 out.  Logan then proceeds to work the count full at 3-2 and then drops a “Texas leaguer” for a double in between the infield and outfield to score one. 5-0 Clemson with Byrd at-bat runners second and third, two out.  Byrd flies out to end the inning 5-0 Tigers over Irish as they head to the top of the 5th.

 

 

 

Notre Dame goes down with no resistance in the top of the 5th as Grayson Byrd yet again ends an inning with a putout from his 3rd base position. Wilkie leads off the bottom of the 4th with his 3rd hit of the day.  Bringing up Hawkins no outs, and man on 1st. Fielder’s choice moves Wilkie over to second and brings up Davis Sharpe with one away and man in scoring position.  Sharpe fouls out to the catcher and two out with Bryce Theodosio up to the plate. A long fly ball results in out number three, to the top of the 6th they go 5-0 Clemson over Notre Dame.

 

The Irish go down 1,2,3 in the top half of the sixth inning with Grayson Byrd getting yet another assist making it seven putouts so far for the Tigers third baseman in just six innings. 

In the bottom half with one out, Sam Hall smashed one into the left-field corner for a stand up double bringing Logan Davidson to the plate. Hold on, as Notre Dame heads to the mound and discussion with his pitcher (no one is warming up.  Davison hits a rocket into the gap that was run down for out number three.  End of six innings and it’s still 5-0 Clemson. 

 

 

Top of the 7th saw the Irish get a leadoff single and then proceed to strike out for out number one and two.  Then the Clemson left-hander Matt Clark struck out the Side for out number three.  And lead to the seventh inning stretch.  The bottom half saw Grayson Byrd lead off with a fly out to left field.  Followed by Kyle Wilkie who was three for three on the day and raised his batting average over 50 points just today,  Wilkie then proceeds to ground out to 3rd and with 2 out in the inning it is up to Briar Hawkins to extend the inning.  Hawkins made his way to first only to see Davis Sharpe ground out to end the inning.

 

Top of the 8th and Tigers make a change on the mound handing the ball off to high hander Jackson  Lindley.  The Irish still trying to get on the scoreboard after 7 scoreless innings against Matt Clark. On a routine foul ball left fielder Kier Meredith came up limping after a chase that did not yield an out.  He was replaced and the Irish then grounded out to second base for out number one of the inning. The Irish then muster a hit that drops between three tigers in the outfield.  Followed by a solid double to right that puts runners in scoring position and one out.  The Clemson freshmen high hander from nearby Anderson, SC then faced with runners at second and third faced off and walked the next batter to load the bases and put himself on the hot spot in a hurry. With the Irish posing a serious threat here in the top of the 8th the Tigers send the staff to the mound for a word with the young hurler. With a 3-0 count the Tigers pitcher fired a solid strike and now its 3-1 with one out and bases loaded.  Then another fastball for a strike it is 3-2.  Then a long fly ball out of play results in an RBI and the Irish’ first run of the game and the runners advance on a weird play that involved the ball hitting the first base coach for the Irish.  5-1 Clemson as Monte Lee makes a change on the mound and brings in the tall lanky right-hander Holt Jones out of Santa Monica, CA.  The inning ends in a sharp ground out to short the Irish load the bases only able to get one across in the middle of eight it’s Clemson 5-1 over the Irish.

The Bottom half saw the Tigers Try and add additional runs but when an attempted steal was called out and then ruled it was indeed safe at second and the inning continues. Two outs and a runner on second with Sam Hall at the plate who strikes out looking to end the eighth and send us to the top of the final frame.  5-1 Clemson over Notre Dame. 

 

 

 

The top of the ninth she the Irish facing another inning from the big kid out of California as Holt remains the Tigers pitcher to try and close this one out.  Irish get a leadoff single in the form of a shot to the field in the left center. No one out and a runner on first as Holt walks the next batter to put runners now in scoring a position as the Irish have men on first and second no outs.  An Infield flies then results in the first out of the inning still runners on first and second. Out -number two comes via a high pop foul down the third base line that a very familiar Grayson Byrd puts away.  Still two runners on base at first and second now two outs.  Wild Pitch then moves both runners up the base path an additional ninety feet.  Two Outs runners on second and third 3-2 count and the Big Fella musters a huge Strike out to win the game, Final Score Clemson 5
