President Trump and Trevor Lawerence

On August 9th, Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawerence took to Twitter to express his desire for him and fellow teammates to play this fall. These Tweets caused a new movement that gained the hashtag #WeWantToPlay. Players started to spread their opinions on the subject and expressed how thankful they were for their football programs putting their health and best interests in mind. The movement brought a lot of attention to the college football community. It even started to stir up a conversation in national media, getting so much attention that it also got to US President Donald Trump.
Trump replied to one of Lawerence’s Tweets, expressing that he as well thinks college athletes deserve to play this fall. It also came out that Trump and Lawerence had a phone call to discuss the situation and their opinions on this fall season. Trump explained, saying, “Trevor Lawrence called me two days ago. I spoke to him a couple of times. He said, ‘Sir, I want to just tell you we want it back. We want to play.’ He’s an incredible quarterback — as you know — from an incredible school…” It was very encouraging for the college football community to see that there are still athletes who want to play and an even more significant number of people who want to watch them play.
