Opt-Out: Clemson Players Staying Focused and Opting “In”

What do the names of Ja’Marr Chase (LSU), Rondale Moore (Purdue), Kennedy Brooks (Oklahoma) and Jamie Newman (Georgia) all have in common? Well they will not be strapping up the shoulder pads this fall to play college football. Newman from Georgia left the Clemson Tigers first opponent of the season, Wake Forest, to take over for Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs at Georgia, but announced on September 2nd he would be focusing on preparing for the NFL Draft.

Wake Forest wll not only have to replace its starting quarterback from last season, but will now have to replace its top wide receiver Sage Surratt. Surratt dealt with some injuries late in the season last year and missed the Tigers trouncing of the Demon Deacons inside of Death Valley. Over the last two seasons, Surratt has hauled in 107 receptions for over 1,500 yards and 15 touchdowns.

With all the uncertainty surrounding the 2020 college football season due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, we are seeing more and more players from across the country decide not to strap up the pads this fall and solely focus on preparing for the 2021 NFL Draft.

Clemson fans on the other hand, have not had to deal with any of our beloved Tigers deciding to sit out.

“I told everyone in June they didn’t have to be here or play or anything like that” said Head Football Coach Dabo Swinney last week during his press conference. “Our guys are excited to play and be together. Our guys love playing for Clemson and playing for the Tigers.”

Clemson will travel to Wake Forest next weekend to open up its 2020 college football season. It will be the first time College Gameday will travel to the campus of Wake Forest. Even though there will be no fans, the Tigers will bring their own energy and passion as the players and coaches have been telling the media all week.
