One on One with JD Davis

JD Davis, the son of College Football Hall of Famer and Clemson All-American linebacker, Jeff Davis was a valuable contributor on special teams during his first three seasons. Davis entered 2018 with 72 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and a sack in 431 snaps over 37 games in his career. Like their father, Davis and his twin brother Judah are two of five Tigers to earn a championship ring as a second generation Tiger.

This season, Davis has 4 tackles each in the wins over Furman and Texas A&M, three tackles against Georgia Southern, started against Georgia Tech and earned co-defensive player of the week with 10 tackles and a sack, two tackles against Syracuse, at Wake Forest, and at Florida State.

Q – What is it like for you to be on this team with some many guys that you went to high school with?

Davis –  A lot of people told me growing up that college football and high school football are two completely different games and that I better enjoy my high school football days. I was like “Awh, they’re crazy, there is no way I’ll miss high school. Here there is 80,000 fans and primetime games, there is just no way that I would miss it, but when I got here I found out how true that was. There is nothing like high school football, yeah, the games are different but it is a totally different feeling like it’s still a great one. So just having a little bit of high school brought over here with me has been really special.

Q – How excited were you when Will got his first touchdown?

Davis – I was so excited, to see the way that guy works, there is nobody that works as hard but there might be a few guys that just as hard but no one works harder than he does. I know that he was upset about NC State and again at Florida State, thinking that he had two more chances that he didn’t capitalize on. So I was just really excited that he got to capitalize on this one.

Q –  Talk about what it was like for you to grow up around Clemson and then be able to come here for college and win a national championship as your dad did?

Davis – Ever since I knew about my dad’s legacy and everything that he brought here and everything that he did, I dreamed of doing the exact same things and it kind of just drew us in even more and being able to say that we brought the second one here and to do something that my dad did is incredible. I couldn’t imagine it any other way, I am just thankful and blessed.

Q – You and your brother are the first twin brother combination to come through Clemson since the Clear brothers in 2007. Talk about what it is like to play college football with your brother.

Davis – That’s the best part, honestly, I could not imagine not playing with him. If I get a chance at the NFL, it is going to be weird because we probably wouldn’t end up on the same team. So that has definitely been the best part of me playing football.

Q – Looking back on your college career, what would you say is your favorite memory as a Tiger?

Davis – Definitely the championship game, that’s one of the top games of the decade, the top championship game and the back and forth between two titans just going punch for punch and we were able to throw the last knockout punch. That is something that will stick in my mind forever.
