Freshmen DE Murphy Shines in First Action

Myles Murphy Shows Out In Collegiate Debut

By Zachary Wagner

Leading up to the Clemson Tiger Football Teams first game against Wake Forest it seemed that Bryan Bresee had stolen all the spotlight from the other defensive lineman. It was with good regards that the media was focused on wanting to hear how the former #1 overall recruit out of Maryland was coming along adjusting to the Tigers defense.

What most forgot about, was that the Tigers also signed the #3 overall recruit last year, also on the defensive line, Myles Murphy. The Marietta, Georgia native came into Tiger Town as a 6’5 275 pound freshman. Yes you read that right, 6’5 275 pounds as a FRESHMAN.

It was obvious that defensive coordinator Brent Venables was happy with the way the two highly touted recruits had played during fall camp, telling the media that they are “better than advertised” during his media availability last week.

Both Myles and Murphy came to play in the Tigers opening road win against the Demon Deacons, both recording their first collegiate sacks within the first quarter.

At the end of the night though, it was the Georgia native that the media wanted to talk about. Murphy led the team with seven total tackles and led the defense with two sacks as well. The true freshman recorded four solo tackles, one of them stacking up the Wake Forest running back behind the line of scrimmage for a loss.

With the extent of the injury to sophomore Tyler Davis unknown, the Clemson defensive line will be in good hands with Murphy and Bresee shoring up the middle. Add in Justin Foster, who did not make the trip to Winston-Salem, Xavier Thomas, and KJ Henry who also played well in the win, the Tiger defense is in good hands for the weeks to come.
