PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The second day of the 2022 Penn Relays proved extraordinary for the Clemson track and field program, as several Tigers posted impressive marks, including the 4×200 meter relay group consisting of Fabian Hewitt, Guinove Joanus, Wanya McCoy and Cameron Rose that brought home the championship in the event. This marks the Tigers’ tenth all-time wheel won at the Penn Relays, with the last coming in 2018 when the women’s sprint medley group took it home.
At least one Tiger advanced to finals in all but one event in which Clemson participated. This sets up for a thrilling final day in Philadelphia with the chance for even more Clemson athletes to take home championships.
“This was a very good day,” said Program Director Mark Elliott. “Whenever you can win a championship at the Penn relays, that’s pretty special, especially with making finals in so many events. Just a very good day, and congratulations to our men’s 4×200, as they did a great job.”
HIGHLIGHTS
- The men’s 4×200 relay won a fabled wagon wheel at the Penn Relays for their performance in the event. 1:22.91 was best and enough to bring home the hardware.
- The women’s 4×100 meter relay of Ockera Myrie, Kiara Grant, Trishauna Hemmings and Serena Clark finished second with a time of 43.87 seconds. That was best in their heat and sends them through to Saturday’s finals at 1 p.m.
- The men’s 4×100 team of Giano Roberts, Cameron Rose, Guinove Joanus and Dashinelle Dyer advanced to Saturday’s finals at 1:05 p.m. with a time of 39.83 seconds
- The men’s 4×400 meter relay of Cameron Rose, Tarees Rhoden, Wanya McCoy and Aman Thornton posted a 3:09.92 mark, which won the heat and puts them in Saturday’s final, scheduled to start at 3:35 p.m.
- The women’s 4×400 relay of Kenya Thompson, KK Gadson, Areya Campbell and Courtney Williams made their way into Saturday’s finals with a time of 3:40.47, good for ninth-best of the day. The finals will begin at 3:29 p.m.
- Trishauna Hemmings posted a 13.41 second 100 meter hurdles time, winning her heat and giving her the chance to compete for a championship on Saturday at 2:09 p.m.
- All three of Devon Brooks, Lafranz Campbell and Giano Roberts posted a strong enough marks to participate in Saturday’s 110 meter hurdles finals at 2:15 p.m.
- Fabian Hewitt earned the right to compete in the 100 meter dash finals tomorrow when he ran a 10.44 second time in Friday’s prelims. That championship is slated to start at 2:26 p.m. on Saturday.
- DJ Ledell finished sixth the men’s long jump with a 7.07 meter leap.
The Tigers will also have some exciting opportunities in throws events tomorrow, with discus throw school-record holder Rojé Stona prepared to compete for the championship at 11:30 a.m. Triple jumper Harleigh White will take a crack at that event’s championship at 2:30 p.m.
