Donovan Starr Commits to Clemson: A Familiar Recruit Returns

In a swift transfer portal move, former Auburn freshman cornerback Donovan Starr has signed with Clemson, marking the Tigers’ fourth portal addition of the cycle and their third defensive back.

The commitment came on January 6, 2026, just days after Starr entered the portal following his one season on the Plains. Starr, a Brentwood, Tennessee native from Ravenwood High School, was a standout four-star recruit in the 2025 class. Ranked as high as No. 136 nationally and No. 18 among cornerbacks by 247Sports, he showcased elite athleticism — winning Tennessee 3A state titles in the 100-meter dash (10.56 seconds) and high jump (6-6) as a junior, while also posting a 22.06 in the 200 meters.

Clemson heavily recruited him out of high school, earning a visit in April 2024, but Starr ultimately chose Auburn over the Tigers, Tennessee, Missouri, and others in June 2024. At Auburn in 2025, Starr saw limited action as a true freshman, appearing in nine games primarily on special teams and in a reserve defensive role. He did not record any tackles, reflecting the depth ahead of him in a competitive SEC secondary.

The fit at Clemson is intriguing. With three years of eligibility remaining, Starr brings high-upside athleticism to a secondary looking to bolster depth after recent departures. Clemson’s staff, familiar with him from high school recruitment, sees him as a potential impact player in their scheme — his speed and ball skills align well with the Tigers’ emphasis on versatile, playmaking corners. This feels like a delayed homecoming for a prospect who nearly chose Clemson the first time around, giving Dabo Swinney’s program a talented young piece to develop for the 2026 season and beyond.
