Fans and media alike got the chance to hear from members of the Clemson football roster on Wednesday as everyone closely anticipates the start of fall camp as well as the season. One of those members in attendance was quarterback DJ Uiagelelei. It is no secret that DJ was under the microscope as every throw was closely analyzed. For just a first-year QB at the time, DJ had to face every challenge thrown at him while dealing with the intense scrutiny of the media and the fanbase. DJ battled through various injuries including a nagging knee injury and having a splint on his index finger on his throwing hand. DJ also had to manage through a constant rotation of receivers and lineman due to injuries of their own.
When asked about this adversity at ACC kickoff, DJ stated how those experiences have only made him better, and how he has developed a better appreciation for winning.
“It has definitely helped man, I feel like, just going through those bumps in the road has made you appreciate winning, I think that’s the big thing, from all of life. I never lost more than two games in a season and winning has been something I’ve always known, and I feel like going into the new season I have a new appreciation and taking each game more serious.”
One of the fascinating discoveries you make at media day is getting that glimpse of what fans’ favorite players have been up to and this is the case with DJ. The way Clemson dealt with every obstacle thrown their way was a bright spot in what many pundits consider a “down year”.
Something many can take away from this is that DJ has made it his mission this offseason to take those lessons from last year and use it as fuel as we get closer to the new football season. His newfound perspective and confidence will certainly make a major difference for the team as Clemson looks to reclaim the ACC crown as well as a spot in the College Football Playoff.
