Clemson QB’s take on the Aggies
Week 2 of the college football season brought the Tigers to College Station, TX where they found themselves in a primetime match up facing Jimbo Fisher and the Texas A&M Aggies. Dabo Swinney and the 2nd ranked Clemson Tigers brought with them 2 quarterbacks who would both be playing in the matchup.
This was a familiar setting for Kelly Bryant being the most experienced between the two, stared the game. Bryant ended the game with 205 passing yards and would ultimately get the job done for the Tigers. This was a new environment for freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence, he would come out hot at the beginning of the second quarter and would find Tee Higgins for a 64-yard touchdown pass.
The Aggies from there would begin to apply more pressure on the young quarterback holding him to only 93 passing yards. Lawrence and Bryant both showed immense composure for playing in such a hostile environment. This game was a test for Lawrence, to prepare him for what the rest of his college career looks like and as Lawrence matures more as a player, taking on teams such as the Aggies will be even more of a breeze.
“There is probably a few plays that I could have hung in the pocket for longer instead of scrambling. Other than that I think I played decent, there were a few miscommunications here and their but other than that it was all right.” Lawrence said in his postgame interview. “I don’t think that the environment got to us too bad, we didn’t have any procedure penalties. We played a pretty good game handling the noise from that aspect.”
Regarding the quarterback competition, Lawrence said that he has never seen anything like it before. “I think me and Kelly have done really well handling it and pushing each other, we both want the best for each other. Kelly took over at the end of the game and I was right there cheering him on and when I am in the game, he is right there cheering me on. We just want to win; we want what is best for the team and if what was best for the team was having Kelly in at the end then great, we won the game.”
The Tigers gear up to take on the Georgia Southern Eagles back home in Death Valley next Saturday at 3:30.
