On the outside, the optics saw veterans Nyles Pinckney and Jordan Williams enter the transfer portal and leave Clemson. Losing two players off the defensive line would leave a hole for most teams. Clemson, not so much.
While Williams and Pinckney
is not without depth. Freshmen Capehart and Tre Williams have had a year in Clemson and in the weight room, and a taste of college football. They are ready to make their presence known. Incoming freshman Payton Page has the Dexter Lawrence size and is ready to contribute. This position will return in tact the following year and should dominate.
Xavier Thomas recently announced his return to Clemson. Putting it mildly, Thomas has had a rough year, fighting off the illnesses and getting back into a football groove. With a rededication to football and his career, Thomas could be in for a stellar year. Justin Foster was a major contributor in 2019, but due to an undisclosed injury.
“Obviously, I hate that Justin hasn’t been able to play, but the silver lining is he is excited to come back next year and be the best version of himself,” stated Coach Dabo Swinney. “We’re hopeful. It’s just been a process for him this fall– one of the best leaders we have on this team.”
A return to form for Foster will be huge for Clemson. KJ Henry, Justin Mascoll shared time at one defensive end while freshman Myles Murphy stood out on the other side. The depth at defensive end just isn’t fair with the amount of talent on the roster.
certainly affect the Clemson depth at defensive tackle, the position
The defensive line will be a strength and wear down offensive lines. With Thomas and Foster returning with a renewed hunger, the sky is the limit and look for Clemson to dominate in the trenches. Barring injuries, Clemson will control the line of scrimmage on the defensive side of the ball.
