CLEMSON, S.C. — Clemson’s preparations for the 2026 football season were dealt an unexpected setback Saturday when veteran defensive tackle Vic Burley was arrested by the Clemson University Police Department and subsequently suspended indefinitely from the football program by head coach Dabo Swinney.

Burley was arrested early Saturday morning, Aug. 22, on a charge of public disorderly conduct. According to Pickens County court records reported by The State, Burley was released later Saturday after posting a $257.50 bond. Clemson moved quickly following the arrest, with Swinney announcing later Saturday that Burley had been suspended from the team indefinitely.

The wording from Swinney was brief but firm. Clemson has not announced a timetable for Burley’s potential return, and an indefinite suspension means there is currently no publicly established date for reinstatement.

The timing is particularly significant for Clemson.

The Tigers are preparing to open the 2026 season at LSU on Sept. 5, and Burley was expected to be an important veteran presence in a defensive tackle room undergoing significant change. Clemson entered the offseason needing to replace its top three defensive tackles from the previous season after departures to the NFL and transfer portal, leaving Burley as one of the most experienced players available on the interior.

Burley, a 6-foot-4, 315-pound graduate senior from Warner Robins, Georgia, entered the season having played 267 defensive snaps in 21 career games with one start. He has recorded 24 career tackles, including a half-tackle for loss, and one pass breakup. During the 2025 season, Burley appeared in all 13 games, registering 15 tackles over 175 snaps and making the first start of his Clemson career against Penn State.

That experience made Burley particularly valuable entering 2026.

He arrived at Clemson in 2023 as one of the more highly regarded defensive line prospects in the country after being named Georgia’s Class AAAAA Defensive Player of the Year and earning consensus top-80 national prospect status. His Clemson career, however, has been slowed at different points by injuries, preventing him from establishing the type of consistent role many envisioned when he signed with the Tigers.

Burley had again dealt with an undisclosed injury during preseason camp but had recently returned to action. In fact, just two days before his arrest, Burley produced an encouraging performance during Clemson’s Thursday scrimmage.

Swinney noted afterward that Burley had caught his attention multiple times during the session and expressed optimism about having the veteran defensive tackle back on the field.

That makes Saturday’s development an abrupt reversal.

Instead of continuing to build toward a potentially expanded role against LSU, Burley is now away from the team for an undetermined period while the legal matter and Clemson’s disciplinary process move forward.

From a football standpoint, the suspension places even more pressure on Clemson’s remaining defensive tackles. The Tigers still have options on the interior, including Amare Adams, Hevin Brown-Shuler, Kourtney Kelly, Devarrick Woods, Markus Strong and Patrick Swygert, among others, but Burley brought a level of Clemson game experience that is difficult to replace immediately.
