Tigers Crush Cougars

Clemson took to the field in a Tuesday matchup with the College of Charleston. Clemson Baseball also welcomed former Clemson football players Christian Wilkins and Dexter Lawrence who threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Clemson senior Brooks Crawford made his first appearance on the mound since March 1st after battling an injury and Davis Sharpe, who normally pitches, made an appearance at first base today.

Clemson would strike first with a two-run homer from Logan Davidson putting the Tigers up 2-0 in the bottom of the first.

Jordan Greene would add to the Tigers lead with a three-run homer in the bottom of the third to extend the lead 8-0.

Clemson would retire Brooks Crawford in the top of the 5th inning after 59 pitches. Junior Sheldon Reed would relieve Crawford. Reed would pitch for 2.2 innings and throw 38 total pitches before being relieved by Luke Sommerfeld in the top of the 8th inning. Andrew Coker would relieve Luke Sommerfeld after one inning and 12 pitches thrown to close out the game. But in the end, the win would go to Brooks Crawford.

Clemson would hold the Cougars scoreless until the top of the sixth with a score from Dupree Hart on a 3rd base error.

“What a great win today.” Head Coach Monte Lee said postgame “First and foremost, the pitching staff was outstanding today. It was great to get Brooks Crawford back on the mound and he threw the ball very well for us. We had him on about a 60 pitch count limit and we had to take him a little short of five innings but we wanted to give him a shot at it. Sheldon Reed was outstanding out of the bullpen for us, Luke Sommerfeld and Andrew Coker got his first start as a Tiger for us and he did well. The pitching staff did a great job and it was a pitch to contact type of day.” Lee said.

“I feel really good.” Brooks Crawford said “I have got to say thanks to Travis and Nick our athletic trainers for getting me back as soon as possible. It felt great being back out there with my team and everything. You’ve gotta give props to my team who played really good defense behind me and just got me going today.” Crawford said.

Clemson heads to Columbia for the second game of the series on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
