CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson Men’s Tennis team (6-4) took down Furman 6-1 and Wofford 7-0 in their third doubleheader of the season. Clemson secured the doubles point in both matches and recorded multiple victories in singles.
“Today was great for the program, getting two more wins at home,” head coach Brandon Wagner said. “We continue to build on what we have been focused on as we head into the conference part of the season. I like where we are at and what we are building on by improving each day. We are excited for the next conference play to begin. One of our program’s big goals is to succeed in conference play, and we will be ready.”
Clemson 6, Furman 1
The Tigers came to handle business and quickly secured the doubles point. Wissam Abderrahman and Spencer Whitaker defeated Alex Han and Cole Burna 6-2.
Shortly after, freshman duo Marko Mesarovic and Stewart Aronson defeated Ben Cahill and Emil Westling 6-3 to secure the doubles point and give the Tigers the lead.
In singles, the Tigers continued to dominate, with Aronson wasting no time to defeat John Rado 6-2, 6-0, and not allowing his opponent to score a single point in the second set.
Noa Vukadin followed shortly after, defeating Thomas Kennedy 6-2, 6-3, and giving the Tigers a massive 3-0 lead. Ryuhei Azuma gave Clemson the win by defeating Elijah Poritzky 6-4, 6-3 on court 1.
The Tigers continued to play out as Abderrahman ( 6-3, 2-6, 6-0) and Matt Pitts (7-6 (7-4), 6-1) were victorious on their courts as they gave Clemson the lead. Mesarovic fought hard but ultimately fell 6-4, 6-2, making the final score 6-1.
Clemson 7, Wofford 0
The Tigers continued their success on the day by swiftly defeating Wofford as they took the early 1-0 lead by securing the doubles point of the match. Doubles duo Mesarovic and Aronson were the first to secure a win as they dominated Max Graham and Jack Deveney 6-0, not allowing them to score once during the match.
Securing the doubles point for the Tigers, Smith and Vukadin defeated Will Fullett and Robbie Young 6-3.
In the first singles win of the match, Smith put on an electric show by defeating Alex Horn 6-0, 6-0.
Azuma won his second singles match of the day by defeating Graham 6-0 and 6-1 on court one and giving the Tigers the 3-0 lead over the Terriers.
Abderrahman also won his second singles match of the day after defeating Ashe Ray 6-3 and 6-4 and secured victory for the Tigers.
Playing on, Whitaker bested Deveney (6-3, 6-2), and Aronson (6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (8)) went to play a super tiebreak, while Vukadin played in a tiebreak (7-5, 7-6 (4)) to make the final score 7-0.
Up next, the Tigers are headed to North Carolina for a road match against Duke on Friday, March 1 at 2 p.m. They will then head to UNC to take on the Tar Heels on March 3 at 2 p.m.
