T&F: Chepngetich Named ACC Freshman of the Week

CLEMSON, S.C. – After her outstanding performances this past weekend, Gladys Chepngetich was named the ACC Women’s Freshman Outdoor Performer of the Week as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.

At the Knights Invitational in Orlando, the freshman was first to cross the line in the women’s 800 meter as Chepngetich finished the event with a time of 2:01.70, which was a full six seconds faster than the second-place finisher. The time is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation for the women’s 800 as the freshman leads the U.S. in the event.

Chepngetich is one of three freshmen to lead the nation in a track event so far this outdoor season.

In Orlando, the freshman also ran the final leg of the women’s 4×400 relay for Clemson as the grouping of Makenzie Steele, Ken’Naria Gadson, Courtney Williams and Chepngetich recorded a first-place finish in the event with a time of 3:33.27. The time places them sixth in the nation in the event.

Chepngetich has been remarkable in her first track and field season for the Tigers as she was most recently named the ACC Women’s Indoor Track and Field Freshman of the Year following her impressive indoor season for Clemson.
