Tennis Tigers Take out Chanticleers

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson women’s tennis team advanced to 10-1 for the first time since 1986 with a 7-0 sweep over Coastal Carolina on Sunday. The Tigers have been brilliant, and wrapped up their pre-conference slate with another strong team performance at Duckworth Family Tennis Facility, where they improved to 9-0 this season including seven sweeps.

“What a way to finish the week,” exclaimed Head Coach Amy Sargeant. “Our goal today was to back up what we did on Tuesday and focus on competing on our terms. Today we had to be resilient in different areas and lock in to playing our tennis.”

“Up and down the line we are continuing to prove that we can make things happen when we commit to what we want to do.”

It was all Tigers early, as the doubles pair of Cristina Mayorova and Leigh Van Zyl made quick work to win Court 2 6-0, while No. 42 Samantha Buyckx and Jenna Thompson earned a 6-3 win on Court 1 to clinch the doubles point.

Clemson did not slow down, as all six Tigers won their first set in singles play. Van Zyl and Sophia Hatton carried their dominance through the remainder of the match, winning 6-2, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-2, respectively.

Shortly thereafter, Buyckx clinched the match for the Tigers, winning Court 3 by a score of 6-3, 6-4. The remaining matches would be played out.

Mayorova improved her already stellar record to 10-1, taking a second set tiebreak 7-0 and moving to 3-0 on Court 1 this season. Thompson battled back from a 1-3 third set deficit to take the match, while Dani Medvedeva won a second set tiebreak 7-3 to close out the sweep.

The Tigers will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 24 as they begin ACC play at Louisville. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m.

“Staying committed to a championship mindset is and has been our foundation for Team 48. ACC season starts this week, and we will stay locked in & play on our terms.”
