Tennis: Tigers Defeat Louisville, 4-3, In Second ACC Conference Win

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson Women’s Tennis team (11-8, 2-6 ACC) defeated Louisville (4-13, 0-8 ACC) 4-3 on Thursday, March 28th. This marks the Tigers’ second ACC conference win.

“What a great team win for these Tigers,” Head Coach Boomer Saia said. “The conditions today were tough, with the wind and the loss of the doubles point. Louisville had a lot of momentum, and I commend our players for finding ways to get four points on the board. Watching Cristina Mayorova and Jenna Thompson battle down the stretch and win both of their third sets was awesome.”

“It was neat to watch our team stand up in the face of adversity, so we will enjoy this excellent home win before returning after it for Tiger Tennis Fest on Saturday,” Saia continued. “We are looking forward to the opportunity to take two home wins this weekend.”

In doubles, court one fell first to Allie Gretkowski and Lika Peresypkina 6-3. Court three saw Sophia Hatton and Alina Tsyurpalevych’s first win of the day, 6-4. The doubles point came down to court three, where Jenna Thompson and Leigh Van Zyl dueled hard but ultimately fell 7-5.

In singles, Van Zyl won both her sets easily, 6-2, 6-2. Van Zyl secured the Tigers’ first point of the day, tying the score to Clemson 1, Louisville 1. Shortly after, Medvedeva fell to Jamilah Snells 6-3, 6-3. Following Medvedeva’s loss, Alexandra Anttila was defeated 7-6 (7-4), 7-5.

On court four, Hatton battled hard, winning her first match 7-5. In her second match she defeated Germany Davis 6-3, bringing the score to 3-2, with Louisville leading.

Thompson followed and secured her match after going to three sets. In set one, Thompson won 6-4. She lost the second match 4-6 but pulled off the win in the third set, winning 6-2. With Thompson’s win on court two, the score was level at 3-3.

Coming down to court one, Mayorova fought hard against Jamila Snells. In the first set, Mayorova lost 3-6. Bouncing back, Mayorova finished the match, scoring 6-3, 6-2, and clinched the match for the Tigers.

Next, the Tigers are set to take on Notre Dame at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 30. This match is part of the Tiger Tennis Fest promotion. Fans are encouraged to attend the women’s match and stay for the men’s match against Florida State at 2 p.m. There will be multiple activities for fans of all ages, including an Easter egg hunt, face painting, a food truck, and games. Various raffle prizes will be available during both matches.
