Six Tigers Qualify for 2021 NCAA Indoor Championships

CLEMSON, S.C. – The NCAA has announced its list of accepted athletes for the 2021 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships with Clemson set to be represented by six student-athletes. The Tigers’ contingent is made up of Trishauna Hemmings (60-meter hurdles, 200 meters), Laurie Barton (800m), Andrea Foster (800m), Terryon Conwell (200m), Fabian Hewitt (60m) and Giano Roberts (60m hurdles).
The competition will get underway on Thursday, March 11, and will go through Saturday, March 13, at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark. The indoor championships return to the University of Arkansas for the first time since 2015 and for the twelfth time in history. Clemson has won six national championships during indoor championships hosted by Arkansas.
Hemmings will contest both the women’s 60m hurdles and 200m, making her Clemson’s first woman since Dezerea Bryant in 2013 to contest two individual events at an indoor national championship. Hemmings will be the third Clemson athlete and second female to contest both events at the same championship. Brianna Rollins was the first woman to accomplish the feat, as she competed in the two events in 2010.
Barton and Foster will return to the championships after earning indoor All-America distinction for the event in 2020. Barton and Foster are just the second and third women in program history to qualify for the 800m in consecutive years. Karen Hartmann qualified for the event during the 1992 and 1993 championships. Natoya Goule won the women’s 800m title the last time the meet was hosted by Arkansas, running 2:01.64 in the final to set the school record.
Roberts will be the seventh male in program history to represent Clemson in the 60m hurdles and third over the past two seasons. Roberts enters the championships as Clemson’s No. 10 all-time performer for the event and the ACC runner-up after crossing the line in 7.78 during both the prelims and final.
Hewitt will be Clemson’s first representative in the 60m since Tevin Hester in 2016. Clemson has previously won two indoor championships in the event, with Travis Padgett winning in 2007 and Jacoby Ford capturing the title in 2009. Padgett’s win came on the straightaway at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
Conwell will be the ninth member of Clemson’s men’s team to compete at an indoor national championship in the 200m. Conwell became No. 7 all-time at Clemson for the event by running 20.75 at the Bob Pollock Invitational and ACC Championships.
Hemmings and Hewitt enter the NCAA indoor championships after capturing the ACC title in the women’s 200m and men’s 60m, respectively, last weekend.
