Schieffelin Stars in Clemson’s Sunshine Slam Championship Victory

Ian Schieffelin totals 18 points, 13 rebounds and 8 assists in tournament championship

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Ian Schieffelin (Atlanta, Ga./Grayson) continued his dominant play this season with an 18-point, 13-rebound double-double and added a career-high eight assists for good measure to help lift Clemson University men’s basketball to a 75-67 win over Penn State in the Sunshine Slam Championship on Tuesday evening.

Ian Schieffelin earned tournament MVP honors for his performances against San Francisco and Penn State.  Chase Hunter (Atlanta, Ga./Westlake) was named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Tigers (6-1) won their second consecutive in-season tournament championship after winning the Asheville Championship last season with wins over UAB and Davidson. The Nittany Lions had not lost a game all season coming into the title game and Clemson held them to 31 points below their season average.

It was Head Coach Brad Brownell’s third regular season tournament championship at Clemson and the Tigers’ 30th overall in history. The last time the Tigers won a regular season tournament title in consecutive years was 2005-06 and 2006-07.

Schieffelin was one of four double-digit scorers for the Tigers to go along with Chase Hunter (17), Chauncey Wiggins(Grayson, Ga./Grayson) (14) and Del Jones (Landover, Md./Arizona Compass Prep) (10).

Clemson took a back-and-forth game lead into the break and led Penn State 38-36. The Tigers trailed by as many as seven in the first half but were able to overcome. Clemson led by as many as seven themselves in the second period, but Penn State erased the deficit and tied the game at 61-61 with 6:58 left in regulation.

An immediate 6-0 run by the Tigers helped open up a cushion that they would not relinquish.

The Tigers limited the Nittany Lions to just 4-for-18 from deep, but Clemson won its fifth game of the season shooting 40.0 percent or better from three (47.4).

Clemson returns to the court on Friday, Nov. 29 when it hosts Florida A&M at 7 p.m. on ACCNX.
