Post Practice Player Interviews: Nolan Turner

By Zachary Wagner

Senior safety Nolan Turner is taking on a new responsibility on the Tigers defense this year, leadership. After almost 75% of the Tigers starting back seven graduated or took their talents to the NFL, Turner is one of the few remaining players with a vast amount of experience under his belt.

The Alabama native has appeared in over 40+ games for the Tigers throughout his career in the purple and orange. Every Tiger fan can remember Turner’s interception against Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl last season, sealing the Tigers 29-23 victory over the Buckeyes to seal the game.

“I hold myself to a higher standard.” Said Turner during his time with the media on Monday morning. “It’s been fun to be around these guys and hear their questions and kind of be that “old-head” that guys come ask those questions too.”

Last season Turner registered 66 tackles and 10 pass break ups. He also registered his first career interception in the ACC Championship game before ultimately picking off Ohio State’s Justin Fields with less than 30 seconds left to give the Tigers their second straight trip to the National Championship Game.

“It’s been a good experience for me. I’ve definitely grown as a leader, so it’s definitely been a good experience,” said Turner.

When Turner was asked about if the coming decade will hold up to the past 10 years of Clemson Football, the senior gave a resounding leadership answer.

“Like Coach Swinney always says, “the best is yet to come”” Said Turner. “That’s how the foundation of this program was built and I think you see it every year get a little better. That’s all about the type of guys we bring in here. It’s the work ethic these people have and the coaches have. It’s going to be incredible to see where this program is going to be in 10 years.

Turner will have to show his leadership on Saturday as the Tigers strap up the pads for the first time this season against Wake Forest. Without a crowd in the stands, Turner will be able to communicate more easily with his freshman on the defensive side of the ball.
