November 24, 2024

Clemson, S.C. – Wahabu Musah netted one goal in each half for his first-career brace and the Clemson men’s soccer team downed Providence College, 2-0, on Sunday evening in front of 2,606 fans at Historic Riggs Field. With the win, the Tigers advance to the third round of the 2024 NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament.

The Tigers held the possession for the majority of the first half, getting off six shots to just one for the Friars. Clemson nearly grabbed an early lead in the 15’ as a shot from Tyler Trimnal hit the crossbar and nearly bounced in. In the 43’, Misei Yoshizawa took a corner kick and Wahabu Musah was there to flick the header into the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season and break the 0-0 deadlock heading into halftime.

Clemson had another opportunity in the 62’, but Ransford Gyan’s shot was blocked at the last second and the Tigers held the 1-0 advantage. Clemson put pressure on again in the 64’, but Musah’s shot went just high. Providence had an opportunity in the 69’ following a corner kick, but Patrick Donovan punched the ball clear to keep the Tigers in front.

In the 78’, Trimnal played a ball to Anonio Illuminato whose shot was blocked, but right to Musah who was able to put it away for his second goal of the night.

Clemson out-shot Providence 17-2 and forced the Friars’ keeper to make six saves.

Up next, the Tigers travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., for a rematch of last weekend’s ACC Championship game against No. 8 national seed Wake Forest, game date and time TBA.
