Freshman Wide Receivers Bryant Wesco and TJ Moore Ignite Clemson Offense
Clemson, SC – The Clemson Tigers’ offense roared to life in their 66-20 victory over Appalachian State on September 7, 2024, thanks in large part to the dynamic performances of freshman wide receivers Bryant Wesco and TJ Moore. Their insertion into the lineup has provided a much-needed spark, showcasing their potential to be game-changers for the Tigers.

High School Credentials

Bryant Wesco hails from Midlothian, Texas, where he was a standout at Midlothian High School. As a senior, he recorded 36 receptions for 619 yards and 13 touchdowns, despite appearing in just seven games. Wesco was a five-star prospect and a consensus top 35 recruit in the nation, earning invitations to prestigious events like the Under Armour All-America Game and the Polynesian Bowl.

TJ Moore, from Tampa Catholic High School in Florida, was equally impressive. Over his junior and senior seasons, he amassed 92 receptions for 2,293 yards and 30 touchdowns . Moore was ranked among the top 100 overall players in the nation by multiple recruiting services and was named On3’s MVP of the All-American Bowl week .

Impact on Clemson’s Offense
Wesco and Moore made an immediate impact in their first significant action against Appalachian State. Wesco, starting in place of wide receiver Adam Randall, ignited the offense with a 76-yard touchdown reception on the Tigers’ first drive . He finished the game with three catches for 130 yards and a touchdown, tying the record for the fewest career games to record 100 receiving yards in Clemson history. Moore also shone brightly, catching three passes for 44 yards and a touchdown . His 33-yard touchdown reception showcased his big-play ability and added to Clemson’s record-setting first half in points and yards .

Quotes and Reactions
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney was effusive in his praise for the freshmen. “Two special dudes, and they’re not guys that are just here for a semester,” Swinney said. “They’re gonna be here for a while. They get to grow up in our program” . Swinney also credited wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham for his role in recruiting and developing these talented players.
Quarterback Cade Klubnik, who connected with both receivers for touchdowns, highlighted Wesco’s versatility. “I can’t really think of anything that he’s bad at,” Klubnik said. “You got to see his vertical speed, but he can really do it all”.

Looking Ahead

The performances of Wesco and Moore have not only energized the team but also the fan base, which has been craving explosive plays since the departures of quarterbacks Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence. Running back Phil Mafah noted, “They just showed the opportunity wasn’t too big for them” . As Clemson prepares for the start of conference play, the contributions of these freshman wide receivers will be crucial. Their ability to create separation and make plays downfield will be key to the Tigers’ offensive success this season. In summary, Bryant Wesco and TJ Moore have quickly established themselves as integral parts of Clemson’s offense. Their high school credentials, combined with their early collegiate performances, suggest that they have bright futures ahead in Death Valley.
