Extra Innings: Tigers Take 2 in VMI Doubleheader

 

Extra Innings: Clemson vs. VMI series

 

 

 

 

Clemson started started their second matchup of the series with VMI with Davis Sharpe on the bump for the Tigers. In the top of the second inning, Davis Sharpe would quickly retire all three hitters, including two strikeouts. Sharpe would continue a streak of a 123 inning going into the top of the third inning, Sharpe would strikeout two of the three hitters. The freshman had so far retired eight batters in a row. Sharpe and Jewell would both quickly retire hitters, by the end of the fourth inning, Sharpe had retired 11 batters in a row. The game would remain scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when a Grayson Byrd double would send home Davis Sharpe. Clemson would continue to bring runs in at the bottom of the fourth inning with a three run homer hit by freshman Adam Hackenberg, that would send himself, Grayson Byrd and Jordan Greene across home plate and extend the Tigers lead by four runs.

 

VMI would retire Jewell at the bottom of the sixth inning. Jewell pitched for five innings and threw 90 pitches. Jewell was replaced by freshman Will Lopez.

 

Clemson added to their lead at the bottom of the sixth inning on a solo home run by Grayson Byrd.

 

Clemson retire Davis Sharpe at the top of the seventh inning. Davis pitched six innings, threw 92 pitches with 11 strikeouts, the most strikeouts by a Tiger since Charlie Barnes who also had 11 against NC State back in 2017. Owen Griffin would replace Sharpe on the mound.

 

 

VMI would remain scoreless until the top of the seventh inning and would score on an RBI hit by Warner.

 

Clemson would add to their lead with a three-run homer by Bryar Hawkins who was making his first plate appearance of his career. This homerun would bring Teodosio, Hall and Hawkins across homeplate and extend the Tigers lead by 7 runs.

 

Luke Sommerfeld would appear at the bump at the top of the eighth for the Tigers and relieved Griffith who threw 26 pitches in one inning.

 

VMI would bring in a run at the top of the eighth, Diodato would bring a run in for the Keydets.

 

The Keydets would bring in a new pitcher at the bottom of the eighth inning. Spence would replace Lopez who pitched for 2 innings and threw 49 pitches.

 

The Tigers would take the second game of the series defeating the Keydets 8-2 in 9 innings.
