Dabo Swinney Sunday Teleconference : RECAP
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney held his weekly teleconference with the media tonight and went back over the Tigers impressive performance on Saturday in Tallahassee.
Swinney started off with his opening statement which included discussing how “Really proud our team for a great win” and that they “Played with great focus and discipline… .Lots of passion” and described how it was a “Historic game for our seniors and our program”.
Dabo went to talk about what the staff saw after the game when reviewing film and said “A lot of good stuff in the game . . . Only had six negative yards..no sacks. . . Really good in the red zone . . . Gage Cervenka outstanding really please with the job he did . . . Jackson Carman took a step forward”
On some of the example of issues that still could be addressed and worked on moving forward Swinney mentioned “Couple careless penalties. . . Backs being disciplined” But when summarizing the afternoon and how his team performed he stated “Overall a great day”
On the defensive effort, he brought up the that the Tigers defense was able to hold the Seminoles to only “21 yards rushing “ and also added “5 sacks”. Then he pointed out that they “Dropped an interception” and that the “Backups gave up 10 points”.
On the play of the Clemson special teams units, Swinney was very happy and said “Special teams made a huge impact in the game. . . Created a turnover on the punt team . . . BT(Potter) getting his first field goal”
He then mentioned this week’s game inside Memorial Stadium on Saturday with the Cardinals of Louisville. The Cardinals are just off a bad home loss to Wake Forest and are in the midst of an “un-Petrino-like” season. Swinney mentioned “Take on a Louisville team had a lot of big battles”
Dabo then mentioned the Tigers starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence and how he was progressing since stepping on campus back in January. Swinney said that Trevor was “Good understanding of our system. . . Playmaker… .Definitely on the right track… .I was expecting him to get here and be a highly talented young player “
On the team and what he has seen out of them to this point Swinney mentioned “Very selfless team. . . We have improved in all areas”. On the depth of this years team, Swinney said it “ Creates great competition . . . Just made us better. . . You saw it this week… we lost our starting center and Gage was ready to go. . . backups knowing I gotta be detailed….Three out of four road trips played our entire roster . . . We gotta a lot of guys that can go in and not miss a beat”
Asked if he pays attention to the College Football Playoff rankings when they are announced on Tuesday at 7 pm Swinney said “We pay attention to it… But it just doesn’t matter unless they are gonna cancel the rest of the season. . . We got four more games to play we know of, and trying to earn a 13th. . . Gotta pay the price every single week …in full
For us, it really doesn’t matter . . .
Finally on Lawrence and how Trevor reacted to a certain play on Saturday where Lawrence showed a little “fire” Swinney had this to say about his talented Freshman Quarterback “Don’t mistake his cool Hand likeness to having a competitive fire in his gut”
