Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney has had to deal with many hurdles involving his wide receiver group through the first eight months of 2020, having to replace his top two pass catchers. This is no easy task as last season the duo of Tee Higgins and Justyn Ross accounted for over 2,000 receiving yards and 21 touchdowns during the 2019 season.
Swinney has also had to deal with injuries during fall camp. It was announced in June that the Tigers would be without their top receiver for the season when Justyn Ross underwent a spinal surgery. Clemson has also had to deal with bumps and bruises on its other top receivers during fall camp including Amari Rodgers, Frank Ladson Jr., Joseph Ngata and Ajou Ajou the highly toughted freshman.
So who has stepped up in the absence of these big-name players? Listen to what Coach Swinney had to say after the two scrimmages from this week:
Following the scrimmage inside of Death Valley on Saturday, Swinney stated that “I think Cornell Powell was the best player on the field today” and also mentioned the day that red-shirt freshman Brannon Spector had.
Swinney doubled down on his words following the conclusion of the scrimmage on the last day of fall camp on Tuesday, stating that Spector had another great day and made an important catch in the scrimmage.
The emergence of both Spector and Powell will help the Tiger offense this season as they look to replace their two top producers. Look for both of these athletes to have breakout years.
