As the college football season has kicked off and teams have started to hit the field, unfortunately, we have also seen games get postponed due to COVID cases. The upcoming matchup between the #7 Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons has been delayed due to COVID cases from Notre Dame. Out of 94 COVID tests administered to Notre Dame Football student-athletes on Monday, seven of them came out positive. Notre Dame Head Coach Brian Kelly said, “We knew COVID would present challenges throughout the season, and we’ll always put student-athlete health and safety at the forefront of our decision making. We look forward to resuming team activities and getting back on the playing field.” The team hopes to hit the field as soon as possible to get back into gameplay.
The Florida State Seminoles have a big game coming up this Saturday’s they face the #12 Miami Hurricanes. Unfortunately for FSU, their Head Coach Mike Norvell will not be in attendance after testing positive for COVID. FSU Athletic Director David Coburn said, “This is unfortunate, but luckily Coach is feeling fine. We are proceeding with our COVID protocols as we would with any other case.” Taking his spot for the upcoming game will be Deputy Head Coach Chris Thomsen.
As teams like Notre Dame and FSU have to overcome obstacles in the way of their season, the Clemson football program is headed in the right direction. Clemson Athletics has administered 1,108 COVID tests during its latest rounds of surveillance screening of all student-athletes and staff since September 11th. There have only been a total of 16 positive tests, with nine of them being student-athletes. The Clemson Tigers football team has a bye week this upcoming weekend before facing the Virginia Cavaliers on October 3rd.
