Clemson Basketball opens Season with 100-80 Win over the Citadel

Clemson , SC

Brad Brownell got win number 150 of his Clemson career and on the same evening eclipsed 100 points for the first time during his tenure as Clemson’s head coach. The 100 points represent a feat that had not been reached  by a Tigers team since 2009 against Winthrop. With his 150th win it marks 1-0 in 2018 and after an undefeated home campaign in 2017-18 the Tigers are off to a great start in 2018-19.

The Tigers  had six players  finish with double figures led by Marquise Reed who scored 20 points in the 37 minutes the senior guard played.  The biggest surprise of the night was the appearance in the starting line up of Eli Thomas . . . Thomas was a game time decision on his availability and was not expected to play  tonight.  Eli informed the staff during pre game warm ups he wanted to play and Brownell and staff inserted the big Texan into the line up.

Thomas was able to get in 24 minutes as Brownell managed the big man’s time on the court as to not cause any additional injury to a bone bruise he is nursing. Clemson was able to control the perimeter of the defense all night forcing the Dogs from Charleston out of their comfort zone and into the Tigers own of sorts.

Extending the defense to force the Citadel off the three point line. with this tactic it forced  the Bulldogs to challenge the interior of the Clemson defense and into a Tigers strength.  Thus the Tigers were able to keep the pace a tick under what the Citadel likes to run.   And with the six players in Orange scoring in double figures it was just too much for the Citadel and Coach Baucoms team.  Clemson 100- the Citadel 80 .
