Davidson’s Walk off Homerun Leads to Tigers Sweep of the UNC Series

Davidson’s Walk off Homerun Leads to Tigers sweep of the UNC series

After coming off two wins yesterday, Clemson took to the field for the series finale against North Carolina. The game would come down to the bottom of the ninth inning with a two-out, two-strike homer from Logan Davidson. Davidson would launch the ball into the Cajun Cafe sending himself and Sam Hall across home plate for the Tigers to end the game with a 5-3 win giving them their first series sweep of North Carolina since 1997.

Freshman Keyshawn Askew took to the bump in his first appearance in a weekend series this season. The freshman pitched for 5.1 innings and struck out three. Askew was asked postgame how he felt starting on a Sunday and he said “Amazing, It was amazing. I was just trying to keep the same mentality as I had in my last starts and my last appearances and of course, playing against UNC, who is such a good team and especially with it being a big game, trying to get the sweep and make a statement. It was great, I had a great time.” The win would end up going to reliever, Carson Spiers who pitched two innings of relief.

UNC pitcher Austin Bergner caused major problems for the Tigers throughout the game. The junior pitcher managed to keep the Tigers off the bases until the bottom of the fifth inning when Bryce Teodosio would even the score with a solo homer.

The Tar Heels fall to 12-4 overall, 0-3 within the ACC while the Tigers move to 13-3 overall and improve to 3-0 within league play. Clemson will play Coastal Carolina, Wednesday night at 6 before beginning a home series against Notre Dame next Friday.

‘“You’ve got to give North Carolina credit, their starter, Austin Bergner was lights out and their reliever, Love was tough on us.” Head Coach Monte Lee said postgame “ You know, we had some opportunities but they capitalized better than we did today, when they had the opportunity.” Lee went on to comment on Sam Hall, “Sam Hall has been our most consistent player in the early going for us and he gave us a chance. We’re down by one run with two outs and he finds a way to get on base.”

“Sam got it going and got a double with two outs, so I was just trying to get a hit and tie the game up.” Logan Davidson said postgame “I was just trying to stay in the middle. I know that they were throwing me a lot of off-speed and a lot of junk. I got some change-ups and I swung at it in the dirt, laid off another change-up in the dirt, I just choked up on the bat. I was trying shoot the ball the other way and he threw me another change-up and I got the barrel to it and the rest is history.” he said as he walked through his homerun.

“I came up and I was looking for a fast ball and he started me off with a slider that wasn’t a strike, I knew he wasn’t going to throw that again.” Sam Hall said “He threw me two more balls and then 3-0, strike. I said yeah, it’s going to be right there this next pitch so I just hit it and I tried to put a good swing on it.”
