Clemson Calms the Storm Against the Hurricanes
By Zachary Wagner
Travis Etienne broke a FBS record for career games scoring a touchdown in and the No. 1/1 Clemson Tigers (4-0, 3-0) defeated No. 7/7 Miami Hurricanes at Memorial Stadium 42-17 on Saturday night. Junior quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw for three touchdowns and also added a third quarter rushing touchdown.
Junior tight end Braden Galloway added two touchdowns on the night and caught four passes for 74 yards and two touchdowns, setting a new career high.
Travis Etienne added 149 yards rushing, including a 72-yard touchdown scamper in the third quarter. The Louisiana native continued showing his improvement in the passing game, recording eight receptions for 73 yards through the air.
Lawrence completed 29-of-41 passes and 291 passing yards. The junior quarterback accounted for four touchdowns (three passing, one rushing).
The Clemson defense picked off Miami’s D’Eriq King three times (Jones, Kendrick, Patterson). Coming into the game, King had not thrown an interception on the year. Baylon Spector led the defense in tackles for the second straight week, adding two and a half tackles for loss and one and a half sacks. The Tiger defense accounted for five total sacks on Miami’s quarterback.
Clemson jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead after Lawrence connected with Galloway and Etienne added a two yard rushing touchdown. Miami answered with a field goal to make the game 14-3 with three minutes left in the half.
Lawrence connected with Galloway for their second strike of the night with just over a minute remaining before the intermission to increase the lead to 21-3. Miami would block a Clemson 61-yard field goal attempt and return it as the clock struck zeros to cut into the Tiger lead, 21-10.
The Tigers would outscore the Hurricanes 21-7 in the second half behind an Etienne rushing touchdown and a Lawrence rushing and passing touchdown to tight end Davis Allen.
Clemson will travel to Georgia Tech for its second road test of the season against the Yellow Jackets at Noon on ABC or ACC Network.
